Crikey.

Canguru Title Hopes in Tatters After Series of Unlucky Bounces! Norse Odds On Favourites!

So... what happened is a pretty good question.

The Elves kicked, the Underworld did some kicking, and eventually my half-hearted cage up the Elf left fell apart a bit. Then I missed that there was a floored player next to my ballcarrier, who popped the ball loose - but when Idan went to pick it up, something went a tiny bit wrong, and it ended up in the hands of one of the cheesegoblins. But then, instead of running into the clear to score next turn, I decided failing a GFI (this was a misclick) in the wrong corner of the pitch (this was idiocy) would be the better choice. This led to the elves wafting a pass downfield to a waiting catcher in the clear to score next turn. The only chance the Undercheesers had was to make two Dodge-less dodges through a tackle zone, succeed a GFI, and 1d block the catcher down with a linerat. So they did that.

Second half there was a bit of a Blitz, and the Underworld swarmed where the ball was meant to land. Some scrapping happened for a while, and then the ball just popped into thrower Jim Morrison's hands, so he ran it in for the opener.

Then I'm even less sure what happened next, but the Elf two-turner attempt went a bit wrong, and eventually Jimi Hendrix, the other thrower, I think, found the ball popping into his hands, so he ran off to the far corner whilst the lads did their best to cover him. I think a wizard might have lightning bolted the nearest elf into the KO box as extra cover. He scored.

Then the Elves finally did their Elfy thing and scored in two, catching in a load of tackle zones and dodging and so on - it was a nice pass, and a nicely done score, and it was 2-1. With only the Undercheesers' Turn 16 to go, unfortunately for the Elves.

So the lads lined up for some goblin flinging, pausing for Jim Morrison to seriously damage an elf, but then Bowie the Troll fumbled the goblin, and that was about that.

A good fun game where the dice probably favoured me somewhat...

Dwarves and Nurgle up for the Undercheesers in the last two games - rather than scraping a point to keep in the top 3, I think I'll be mostly hoping to leave the match with some players alive.

Heh. It actually got worse than that in the second half.

NJ, thanks for the game last night. I had a great time. Well done getting the win!

The Tomb Army will be left kicking themselves (and everyone else, presumably) today after throwing away a golden opportunity to notch up their first win of the season. The game was decided thanks to a combination of questionable decision making from me and shrewd strategical play from NJ.

The turning point should have been Stagocalypse starting the 2nd with so few players but sadly I think the real turning point was an unfortunate fumble from me.

Was fun. and a close game, and you played quite well at getting hard blocks on my players (which I believe they are still feeling).

I felt the big mistake tactically which left me still in the game was -
When you did get the ball in the second half (when your Mummy Picked it up, Really that should have signalled a time to start grinding down the pitch, and making some yardage - but you got distracted by punishing my players some more.
In the end this actually helped me immensely as my 4 players (who this time survived the pounding) were still near enough to the ball without moving and could still get a couple of blocks in and eventually (with a lot of luck) get the ball free. If the ball was even a few squares further down-field with my men so heavily outnumbered you would have been well set.

More of a Match Report

The Stagocalypse escaped with a lucky 2-1 win from the clunking fist of the Tomb Army

Inducements
FOr Once Stags were up in TV, so the undead took a wizard and a bribe.

First Half
- The undead win the toss and decide to kick off to The Norse
- Kick off event "Quick Snap" lets me position my players away from his mummys and shuffle a bit.
- One of the ghouls is too exposed so A Norse werewolf frenzies him into the crowd. Double luck for me he has a fractured leg and will be out for the rest of the game (I'm thinking at this point I can compete physically)
- Norse also run a couple of players into the Undead Half
- Then when trying to manoeuvre my team about I misclick so my Werewolf goes where he shouldn't (through a tackle zone) and turn over.
- The Undead try to retaliate but fail to injure anyone or really threaten the ball.
- The Same werewolf who caused the first injury, goes and kills a skeleton next! But to my disappointment the skeleton regenerates.
- The Norse follow up their successful 2 Turn Touchdown from last week with a another one! The Stag picking up the ball running it close, and passing it (2 passes in 2 Games!) to release a runner down the field (who the undead had left unmarked)
Norse 2-0 up after 2 turns and sitting pretty
- The Norse kick to the undead. Who promptly KO two Norse players
- The Norse hit back to no real effect, and the Undead Respond by injuring two Norse Players. The Norse have lost 4 players from the field in two turns and are looking thin.
- The next few turns see a werewolf injured and a couple of other players KO'd leaving the Undead Free to Score (who have only lost one player KO'd)
1-1 - An equalizer for the Undead! And only 4 Norse players unscathed so far! We were all saying it depends on the KO recovery rate as to what will happen in second half

Second Half
- I roll for KO values for my 6 KOd players. Only 1 recovers so the Stags start the second half with 5 players on the field, against the Undead army of 11
- The Undead receive around the middle of their half. A Skeleton runs to pick up the ball on his own, but fails even with a re-roll (Agility 2 not good for pick ups)
- The Norse decide to Gamble and run into the Undead Half trying to get tackle zones spread around the ball.
- The Undead decide to blitz the Nearest Norse player to the ball, with the Mummy, but his path takes him over the ball. This appears to be no problem as Temmop rolls a 6! So the mummy elegantly picks up the ball then thumps the nearest Norse player, stunning him.
- The Mummy manages to hand off the ball, but the next few turns devolve into hitting around the ball, as this time the Norse players manage to stay on the field exerting tackle zones and getting in 1 Dice blocks.
- Eventually a combination of frenzy, jump up and lucky dice rolls means the ball falls free off to the side of the melange of people.
- Seeing their chance with no rerolls left, the two runners who happen to be that side of the pitch conspire to dive in, grab the ball, and get out again running deep into the Undead half. One of the other Norse players runs around that side of the field to cover too.
This was a staggeringly lucky Move
First One runner dodges out of his tackle zone (3+ - he had dodge so could have rerolled it if needed), Then he single dice blocks the nearest skellington to the ball (effectively 2+) He gets a push which is sufficient to reduce the threat to the ball.
Then the other runner dodges out of his tackle zone (3+) followed by a pick up (3+) followed by a GFI for good measure to put some distance in (2+)
To round off a pretty perfect turn for the norse, they knock over and stun another player, before another berserker dodges free and GFIs to put some cover on the path to the ball.

- To follow up the Spawny lucky Norse turn the Undead Start their next turn failing a dodge, which injures another player and turnover immediately.
- The Norse decide to hit back. Knock over a mummy, and decide to foul him. The ref doesn;t like this and immediately sends another norse player to the baths
- The Norse score their second with 2 turns left
In an extraordinary turn around the Norse Lead 2-1 with 2 Turns left!
- The Norse players off the field are clearly enjoying their relax, and the 5 KO'd players decide to carry on their dreaming.
- The Norse now restart with 4 players versus 9 Undead.
- The Undead have one Ghoul who could potentially 2 Turn TD, but he doesn't manage to run into the Norse half and the game fizzles out

Notes
Although this was Top Versus Bottom this could have so easily gone the other way. Temmop Did really well getting blocks on my players, but was let down picking the wrong player to get the ball, and relying on the dice at crucial moments as the luck really turned in the second half. A bit more Ruthlessness from the Tomb Army might have won it (I don't mean in the blocking stakes so much - in dodging out with the Ghoul and driving forward with the ball)

Dice Notes
The Stag's won on the D6, by a fair margin (when it didn't involve KO rolls), and probably had an advantage on the Block Dice. The 2D6 went to The Undead - breaking the Norse armour 59% of the time (average should be around 40%) With all those breakages we would expect injuries etc.

BBManager doesn't show it, but I managed at least 3 lucky rolls where Temmop picked the dice, I Frenzied once and luckily survived the 3 Dice Against block. Frenzy also pulled me into 2 other positions where I had 2 dice against blocks, and none of them led to a turnover.

Play of the Match
The two runners conspiring to release the ball and escape down-field for the winner takes the cake I think. Luck was with them and fast feet :-)

Thanks very much for the game Andy (from another Andy :-) )

Ident and Spinx. I can do tonight, Wednesday or Thursday nights this week. Let me know if either of you can make one of them and we'll throw down some hot grid iron action or some such.

I can do tonight if you are available. Unless of course Spinx wants to soften you up a bit for me first...

It was a good fun game, and once the man advantage was acquired there was only one way it could go really. Raveen played well, but the Khemri couldn't keep up with the speedy Werewolves who were able to chase down the ball where ever it was. It really could have gone the other way had Rav got in a few injuries early.

Rav lost out on the KO rolls, succeeding only one out of nine. This meant he was missing a Tomb Guardian and a Blitz-Ra for most of the game, and also lost a couple of skeletons.

The highlight of the game was Bone Sims killing The Boy Who Cried Wolf twice! Third time is the charm for The Boy, and now he is finally off to whatever afterlife Nuffle has chosen for him.
