Randomness is a part of the game, obviously. So to reduce the impact of that randomness you take results over a season which in theory at least averages out the luck. You seem to be proposing that we pick two out of our nine teams and tell them that their league game is also a qualifier. As we know you can have bad luck in one game that affects the result, not to mention that the initial selection of those teams is a random event in itself.

So yes, I appreciate that there's always a random element but I thought that it was obvious how it is being mitigated.

You can (and possibly have to) seed entries to a play off competition so I would go top vs bottom and so on.

I'm throwing this out to the forum. Do people want to try Gandalf's way of drawing the teams for the cup or not?

A suggestion about the cup for next year. Apparently we're having it after the end of the league season, and there will probably be more than 8 of us. Rather than having the top 8 teams compete (which is what I'm inferring) perhaps we can make the draw at the start of the league season - so some teams will go straight into the last 8 and some will have to play a match before that. Then make the league match between those teams double-up as the qualifying game. If that's a draw then either flip a coin or use league ranking to decide who gets through to the last 8.

Me - I'm not too fussed, I'm personally not sure of making a league game double as something else, but I wouldn't be miffed if we did it that way.

Would it be too much to have the top two TV teams play off for a place in the cup after the league finishes? Everyone else gets the week off?

just dropping the team with the highest TV is inviting people to sell a few players/bits just before the last game :-)

I don't think anyone is talking about TV, but ranking in the league. Also I think Rav is proposing the bottom team(s) misses out on the cup, not the top or 2nd placed team.

I thought the point of the cup was to increase the randomness somewhat, and give more teams a chance of winning which is what shaped my thinking. Along those same lines I'm not sure if seeding the draw is in that spirit or not.

I like Gandy's idea in principle - but in practice I think it opens up a lot of needless faffing - it's going to be inescapably 'unfair' on someone to miss out anyway; and I know this from playing BB matches in general - I get a lot more 'miffed' when I lose a game due to chance than I do by getting beat by the better team... So, like Rav says, a season should more or less even out your 'bad luck' and a league position is a reflection of your performance - whereas missing out on a cup competition because you didn't draw the right lot (even if it's followed by another miniplayoff) is down to bad luck...

So, I agree with Gandy's thoughts and trying to give the last place in the league something else to play for, but I think (when everyone is being honest with themselves) it would be fairer overall to give the best 8 teams entry into the cup.

BUT, saying that, with me moving house (eek) and possibly being internet-less for a spot of time, I can volunteer myself to be left out of the cup for purely logistical reasons?

I wouldn't call it "missing out on a cup competition" - just that you are either one of the lucky teams to get a bye in the first round or the unlucky ones that have to play a qualifier. Though if I think of it as an "end of season competition for the best teams" (like tennis ATP finals) rather than a "free for all random cup" (like the FA Cup) then that makes me happier. Seeing the posts maybe I thought of it more as the FA-cup style random competition.

Personally, if I finished last in the league then I would feel not playing in the cup would add insult to injury. But then I'm quite a sensitive guy. If we were going to base it on league position then I'd prefer bottom 8 rather than top 8 to show some love to the bottom teams. But then, the challenge of winning the double is quite a fun one, and it contradicts my last paragraph.

Good luck with the house move! I suspect the cup will be happening near or after Christmas so I'm not sure how much moving house now will affect that. But I can imagine there might be someone who wants to sit out come the time of the cup, which would render most of this moot.

I think I have had a good idea!

We are collecting stats with BBM so let's make them count. Each season we pick a stat and that's the thing that the sponsors of the cup use to determine who qualifies. In the event of a tie league finishing positions will be taken into account.

Sure it favours some teams over others (the passing one will favour Elves, the brutes one will favour bash teams) but it'll even out over time I hope.

The stat in question will be set before games are played but after the teams are submitted so it doesn't affect race picks and will be randomised so I can't affect which teams get an easy qualification.

I'll work out which stats can make up the list later today (because the killers stat probably won't work).

Teams will be ranked by TV, playing similar TVs in the first round of the cup (this gives new teams an even chance of getting to the final).

I hope this idea covers Gandalf's concerns about qualification but also adds something to the league stage - we might see lots of teams trying passing plays if that's the qualifier for example.

Actually yeah that could be quite hilarious. Although it's not a category you can really target, it would be like a consolation prize for having your butt kicked repeatedly.

Normally you'd say passing ones then on account of there being a dwarf team, but Spinx is no normal dwarf coach...

I think there are some teams who definitely won't win certain categories, but surely everyone has a chance of not finishing last?
