Preseason games discussion

I was chatting to Idan on steam last night (and apologies to Idan for flitting in and out but I was required to help make the bed...) about giving new teams pre-season games to help them get up to speed. Idan pointed out that his team isn't that developed and currently has injured players and he felt that it wasn't fair to give new teams free games.

Now my reasons for adding the games is to give teams a chance to start developing because I know that my team only gained skills in time for the last match of season 1 and a game in hand at the start would have helped get things moving (and let's face it, developing teams is part of the charm of BB).

I think Idan has a very valid point and I think it's only fair to give veteran teams the chance to at very least get over MNG injuries in the off season so I think that Veteran teams should get a pre season game too, if they want it.

I propose that we create a new league in BB called RT Preseason or similar (I'll take care of this) We then each create a Halfling or Goblin team as easy opponents for these games. The concept being that whoever is about can play the game. The aim on the Gobbo/fling side should be silly fun rather than an attempt to destroy the opponent. Feel free to play to win but don't play to maim ;)

What do we think? This would give vet teams the chance to get over injuries, new teams the chance to get SPPs and would be a place for new coaches to play a practise game that can contribute to their ongoing team.

Thoughts people?

The only problem I can see is that we need to make sure that we set up all leagues to accept developed teams. You have to do this when the league is set up because you bloomin' well can't change it once the league has started. The option is there, it just doesn't bloody work. Or at least it didn't any of the times I tried it last night.

I don't like this idea.
I know that my team only gained skills in time for the last match of season 1

If you concentrate and have a teeny bit of luck you should be able to get some skills after game 2.

This would give vet teams the chance to get over injuries

I got a wardancer injured in my last game, he will miss the next game, but I'm happy to just suck it up. Injuries are part of the game.
new teams the chance to get SPPs

New teams are new, they aren't supposed to have SPP's :p
and would be a place for new coaches to play a practise game that can contribute to their ongoing team.

If you are playing a new team there are plenty of online and offline ways to practice.

Finally in order to be "fair" every team would have to play the same number of preseason games, so you'd end up with a preasons almost being another season in itself...

Depends very much on what team you're playing. Some teams develop much slower than others.

Fair enough - it's hardly realistic though, but then I suppose what is.

Why not? Also we started new teams against other new teams. Anyone starting a fresh team now is likely to be starting against a developed team, to a greater or lesser extent (not too much of an issue now but a rookie team vs a TV2000 team is not going to be pretty, even with inducements).

I think it would be a good idea to introduce the social side of things at the same time as the gameplay. Also giving them an easy game will help to hook them ;)

Not really. A season is a series of games with competitive results. These games would be limited to one per team, against silly opposition and played as friendlies.

I don't mind teams getting some spp's, it's just that the implementation is a bit over the top in my opinion.

Maybe we can allow teams to play one competitive games at one of the open leagues, where you use matchmaking to play against other similar level teams, before joining the RT league?

As we have a number of new teams I think we can shelve this concept for now. If the new starters have a really hard time then we can always reconsider it.
