BB Match reports - 9th Feb

Postby Adept » Sat Feb 09, 2013 5:31 pm

I squared off again vs. Wyld's Chaotics (sadly I immedeately forgot his team name again). 1 - 1 draw this time.

A more exciting match this time, as I managed to slip a halfling through and score. Wyld scored as well with a frankly amazing long distance pass I never expected to pay off. One of my lardballs managed to snap his own neck while going for it, Esmeralda rest his violent little soul. Plenty of violence was had, with halfmen cheerfully fouling for all they were worth... sadly for little effect.

Great fun once again Wyld.  8)

I can't help but feel that Adept would be comfier with goblins. All the stunty fun with added chainsaws, bombs, ball and chain and a pogo stick.

Yeah, once again the Astrogranite Apocalypse showed fairly typical form for a Chaos team, inflicting much damage but not managing to turn that into a win.
My touchdown was sheer dumb luck.  The ball handler had to dodge clear of the halfling marking him, make two GFIs to get into position, then threw a perfect mid-range pass to a receiver who not only caught the ball, but managed another GFI to touchdown.  Given my recent luck for GFIs that was really quite something.
Sadly, when kicking I decided that time was short so I left my center open on the kick to avoid getting tied down by the treemen which meant that although my flankers managed to menace the ball handler, he was able to win clear and pass down the middle.  A flubbed GFI by a chaos warrior left the stunty li'l bastard with a free run to score and tie the game.
Dumb luck could've won me that match, but a poor coaching decision by me was capitalised upon by Adept to turn it into yet another draw.
Good point with the gobboes, Rav.  Given Adept's fondness for fouling my players he'd probably be ok with the tendancy to risk Goblin cheats getting sent off.

Gobbos aren't cute! It's funny when it's halflings jumping up and down on a beastman's head!  ;D

I'm feeling quite under the weather and not up to tackling the ecological math I'm supposed to be doing. Is anybody up for a match? Rav, did you set your game up yet? Is Idan free? Anybody?

That would be utterly brilliant NJ. I hope to see you soon, I'll keep myself logged on mumble.

2 games, 2 losses.

First was 2-1 to Adept. I took an unbelievable pasting at his hands. At times I had 2 or 3 rats standing. It was ridiculous! Adept's players seem ridiculously gifted in beating up people but similarly awful in ball-handling - he only managed his first touchdown on the turn before half-time despite huge numerical advantage. The penultimate kick-off was 11 vs 7 (thankfully I had 2 or 3 subs so was still able to field the magnificent amount of 7), but I pulled one back in ridiculous fashion, as my stormvermin dodged past 2 players (stormvermins are not agile players), then the next go he was vs 4, got knocked down but actually didn't cos Adept forgot he had a block skill, then handed it off to a gutter runner who ran half way sideways across the pitch to get round all the defends and got the touchdown.
Other hilarious moment was 4 halflings vs my gutter runner and Adept rolling triple "attacker down" :D

Second was vs Wyld, who actually knows how to play. I had I think £430,000 to spend on inducements, however since I had never had any money to spend on inducements I was a bit baffled by all the options and probably didn't pick the best ones. Add to this the fact I had 3 rats who had to miss the game after getting beaten up by halflings, meant I was effectively £580,000 down.
As Wyld has more of a clue of how to play than me, and had the above advantages, he went 2-0 up after 10 turns and I resigned it after my rat ogre bit the dust again, he was kinda crucial to holding up the thumpy chaos warriors. No fun was being had at that point by me really so best to move on.

My 3 injured rats will be back next game though so it won't be quite so bad.

It was silly fun showcasing my comedy vicious-little-whatsits play style vs. Gandy. I did my best to put the gutter runners permanently out of commission, but things like the triple skulls and their innate slipperiness foiled me every time. The bigger rats went down in spades though, as Gandy said, and even the ratogre was put into the infirmary... and I don't even think that was a treeman hit.

The sturmvermin scoring was completely silly. He was actually forward, holding the line on one flank, and my kickoff went horribly wrong. The ball deviated extremely forward and to the side, and literally bounced into his hands. The rest was just comedy gold with Gandy's newest and probably least agile rat basically dodging his way to a solo touchdown.

Each injured rat gets you an extra visit to the sweet trolley lads!

That's how to motivate halflings :-)

Played Wild's Chaos Team last night

Amazon versus Chaos
My meager team got a bit of bonus cash so i took, A halfling Chef, and an Apothecary

1st Half

Chef does nothing
Chaos opt to recieve and pick up the ball in their half with no problems.
Move up the field attempting to bash their way through, but the Amazon's dodge, and the fact Wild is pretty unlucky with dice mean the Amazons are hardly scathed.
Chaos gets to the half way line and decides to attempt a pass into the Amazon half for a touch down.
Even with reroll this fails and the Amazons snaffle the ball and smuggle it up the pitch by the sideline to score at the other end towards the end of the half

1-0 to the Amazons

2nd half.

Halfling chef steals two of Wilds re-rolls (I now have 6 to his 2)

Amazons are unscathed apart from a single Knocked out player who hasn't recovered.

Amazons opt to receive, The ball drops back in the corner right next to end zone.
Can't pick up first turn as it's too far to risk. Fail to pick up on the second turn (3+ roll with a reroll fails). Ball rolls out of play and reappears in the middle of my half.
My 3rd attempt to pick up there fails, and by this time Wilds Chaos boys have stormed through to get the ball, and score a touchdown

1-1 with plenty of time left in second half. Amazon's have 2 players who are KO'd now....

Amazon's receive, this time manage to pick up the ball, and try to move the ball about a bit, but Wild does a good job at limiting my good passing options.
Throughout this Amazons are still managing to hold their own (just about) in the physical battle, and don't suffer injuries, through a combination of Dodge, and wilds inability to hit too many good injure rolls.
Manage to break a hole in Chaos lines and run he ball up to next to the end zone.
Chaos are struggling to get players close enough to threaten the carrier so I decide to prance up and down by the end zone a bit to run down the clock.
This almost proves my undoing as as one chaos Lineman manages to blitz the ball carrier by getting up from the floor, dodging two tackle zones and winning a single die roll. Fortunately I can recover and score with my last turn.

2-1 to Amazon's with just one Chaos turn left
I decide to place all my players by my end zone safe from harm, which proves useful as "Riot" is rolled giving an extra turn to do stuff.
Not quite enough for Chaos to threaten goal though.

Result 2-1 debut win to "All within our Ambit"

Fun game, but feel  I was more than a bit lucky to avoid too much injury to my lightly armoured wimmin.

Yeah, that final touchdown by NJ was hilarious.  For two full turns I was almost pleading with him to just get along and score because sooner or later the dice will betray you.  It's always tempting to risk a short, easy pass in this situation; spreading around those SPPs helps to prevent the situation where you have only one or two high level players which become crumping magnets.
Against Chaos in particular though, this is a very risky way to play.  Those Beastmen have horns, which means when they blitz they hit with the strength of a chaos warrior (4).  So those isolated players zipping alongside the endzone are at a serious risk of a crumping if I have even a single player within sprinting distance, as NJ discovered almost to his sorrow.
If the scores are tied, time is short and you're in a position to score a win, for your own sake, just score it.  You can always use that final turn or two for a few crumpings in the hope of getting some casualty SPPs.
On the whole though, NJ played very well indeed.  He let his players spread out to force plenty of dodges on my part and reduce blocking opportunities and made the most of the amazon's ability to dodge through tackle zones to outmaneuver me.  Amazons all come with block, dodge or both which means when I do get to bash one it's hard to actually knock her down so their low armour isn't a huge penalty much of the time.

The match against Gandalf's rats went more my way.  I must admit, I was a bit nervous about taking on the Skaven team as Gandalf had been playing them rather well lately, their position at the head of the league table testament to that fact.  Fortunately for me, Adept's bloodthirsty li'l bastards had inflicted some serious damage in the previous match so Gandalf was forced to fill out his ranks with reservists.
To my mind, Gandalf's main mistake was hiring a star player with his bonus cash.  I'm not keen on star players as they're expensive, and any SPPs they earn they take with them after the match, SPPs that could've gone to players you're keeping.  And if they're not earning SPPs they've wasted your gold.  When it comes to inducements, the first place to look IMO is the Halfling Master Chef.  Sure, 300k (100 for halfling teams) is a serious chunk of money, but extra rerolls are always good, especially when they come at your opponent's expense.
That said, the star player did mean that Gandalf had two Rat Ogres front and center, which effectively took my minotaur out of the game and seriously impeded my chaos warriors, meaning I was effectively trying to stop the Skaven running game with Beastmen.
My win was as much down to luck as judgement, including being lucky that several Skaven were out with injury ahead of the match.  The fast and nimble rats were able to shape the game much of the time, forcing me to keep my beasts sprinting around trying to get tackle zones on the ball handler and various related threats.  I scored simply because of my habit of trying to get a player deep into the opposing half in case I manage to set up a pass for them to run in.
In the end, it was a hollow victory for me.  I don't blame Gandalf for choosing to resign if he wasn't enjoying the game, but the fact that he resigned meant my team was awarded both MVP spots and I can't help but feel that's SPPs I haven't earned.
Hopefully next time we play we'll both be able to bring our full rosters and can properly have a go at it.

Hmm.... still not sure the £300,000 is worth if for a potential benefit. My star player was £370,000 and was definitely useful. I really need another re-roll though, just never have the funds for it... though I could give Leader to The Brain which will give me an extra one. The urge to make him an even better passer is tempting though...

I only thought afterwards, that we might've been able to agree on a "peaceful" forfeit by just each of us just clicking "end turn" 6 times each, which would've prevented the SPP issue and perhaps given me some cash at the end too.

Hopefully next time we play we'll both be able to bring our full rosters and can properly have a go at it.

Your full roster is still insanely good though, your team value is huuuuuge!

Now that is a great idea.  I'd certainly be amenable to that as an alternative to regular forfeit rules.  I'd even go so far as to recommend we adopt it as a house rule for the RT league.

Sounds like a good house rule. Maybe a sticky could be started with house rules in?

Nothing wrong with a gentlefolk forfeit like that. It's very RT to adopt a cricketlike air of sportsmanship in a Bloodbowl match  ;D

All that said, it should only happen if the other guy is feeling generous, not as a forced rule. It is bloodbowl afterall.
