Deleting games

Postby Gandalf » Mon Mar 28, 2016 5:31 pm

One of the things in the todo list for BBDB is commissioner tools.

One of the things I was thinking about is deleting matches. This was a feature in BB Manager. However it's going to be a *real* pain to implement, as all manner of bits of data are added/amended in BBDB (a much more sophisticated backend than BB Manager). I don't want to do it if I can avoid it.

I thought about it a bit more, and I don't think this even needs to be a feature. My reasoning is based on reasons why you'd want to delete a match.
- A match uploaded twice by accident. I'm currently working on improving the upload code to remove this possibility.
- Match to be uploaded to multiple competitions. In BBDB you can set a match to be in multiple competitions so you don't need to upload it twice.
- Match uploaded to incorrect competition, so you'd delete it and re-upload it to the right one. In BBDB you can just move it from one competition to the other.

So... none of these 3 will be a reason to delete a match. Are there any others? Do you agree with my reasoning?

NB the ability to do the latter 2 would be in the commissioner's tools, currently they can only be done by me direct in the database.

An incorrect match is uploaded -it's a match that isn't just in the wrong competition, it's been uploaded in error.

Ah yes I meant to cover, you can just move it to "friendlies" - is that a good enough solution?

Or how about... you can move it to a "null" community, so for us that would mean it no longer being classified as an RTBBL fixture, and it would, in effect, be deleted. I may have to think more about this...

I could add in more checks in the upload process to flag up suspect matches. For example, single-player games could be uploaded (could you even do this in BB Manager??).

I see no reason you couldn't upload SP games but I never tested it. And yes, SP games was what I was thinking about. I can see how you might want to upload them to see if the computer was 'cheating' but they shouldn't be carried forward into any statistics.

What if someone uploaded a game whose outcome for whatever reason was in dispute?

I guess you could Move the Log to "Friendly" so it sits outside of the league and Play the game again, And/or directly submit the amended result in some fashion.

An important thing for Commissioner Tools IMO is the ability to Amend and or Enter a result without having to submit a full log.

For example if the game crashed on the last Turn and the Players/Commissioner determined the final turn Scoreline should stand - the Commissioner should be able to enter it, with or without the Borked log

The game still happened. Players got injured, scored touchdowns, made passes, earned SPP, mercenaries played, journeymen played, and all that is stored in BBDB. I don't think you'd want to get rid of that. Otherwise you'd have a situation of Bob the Elf having played 10 games but when you looked at his game history there aren't any details for one of the games.

I can see 3 outcomes in this scenario once the Ruling Committee has decided what to do:
1) Game stands. No action required.
2) Game to be replayed. In which case move the game off to the "friendlies" competition, play it again, and put the new one into the competition.
3) An arbitrary scoreline is to be applied, to be part of commissioner's tools (I think this was doable in BB Manager).

Agree...?
(notj basically posted the same thing while I was typing this up)
