BBDB going open source... help required

Postby Gandalf » Sun Oct 09, 2016 8:58 pm

So... I have done nil coding on BBDB in the last few months, and with nothing happening in RTBBL - and also with other things happening in my life - I doubt I will be doing much on it in the near term. I have also stated on a several occasions that it would be open source by the end of the year, so with these two things combined, I may as well get on with releasing it.

There are more things involved in this than I imagined, but they are all surmountable. However I would appreciated some testing assistance. I have to write up some installation instructions, so it would be great if someone who has access to a PHP/MySQL web hosting solution could test out my instructions and let me know if they work/if they could be clarified. Is anyone up for the task?

I'm also posting this on the facebook group to see if there's a helper available there.

I got a hosting plan that should suffice.

Though I'm not sure exactly when I can get to it.

I'm not quite ready for testing myself yet. It'll be a week or two. I'd like to get it done, tested & on GitHub by the end of the month.

OK... so this took a bit longer than expected - largely down to OTC, but I think it's ready now. I've done some basic testing & refinement at my end and it seems to work.

So, Idan - or anyone else who wants to help - let me know & I can send you the files & instructions and you can give me some feedback before I release it to the world. :)

An update!

With Idanmel's help we've identified a few obvious and not-so-obvious issues with the proposed release. I think we're almost there now... hopefully in the next week. I know timings have slipped a bit, but I stated a few times earlier this year that I was committed to getting it out before the end of the year, so am still on track for that :)

IT IS DONE :)

I have created a wiki on there also, and have copied over some of the more interesting/relevant monologues from here onto there.

All that's left now it to publicise it. I will do so on bbtactics at some point in the coming days. Feel free to spread the word.

I'll look into making this BBDB forum private - it's not really the best place for random people to come to ask questions about it.

Big thanks to Idanmel, the testing revealed many small issues between the live version we used, and the "public-ready" version I gave him, all now hopefully resolved.
