Unless there are any trees about the place? Or decorative shrubs?

Create a small fire, make sure it is hidden from view from the cave side.. Jackals are afraid of fire.

Will  Genius work on Jackals?

If not I will go for plan B

Use Voice of Command and shouting "Sit!" very loudly just as they leap. (The image of dog like creatures involuntarily trying to Sit in Mid air is one I would like to see.)

While waiting Uther also helps Solar with the Fire and readies weapons. (Uther is kind of brave when self preservation is involved and there is no-one to hide behind)

A small fire is made but pretty soon R'rud and Uther have a bigger problem at hand...

It could be just you but the cave you are hiding in just shook and trembled for a second...

Meanwhile, in the Undercity....

The goblins attack, and the elves fight back with their volleys of arrows. The disciplined elven army drives off what has to be goblins a hundred times their number with practiced ease, beating them back from the walls again and again. You stand with your mouth open for most of the time - you have never seen an army fight so ferociously!

And then everything went to hell.

The very earth trembled, and most of you are able to remain on your feet atop the parapets. Somewhere in the distance you can hear a great crash -- a section of the wall has fallen. Andronicus was thrown to the grown unscathed and woke up to see his vision come true.

Lights. A city underground, aflame, elves running, dying, a dark shape surges through the shadows, fire spears forth from it like death's hand. You look down, and kneel. An elf... SYLVOS, is pressing a jade key into your hands....

"This... is the key to the ancient ruins of Belaham, the first elf city.... it made its nest there..."

A death rattle, as Sylvos, noble huskarl of the Undercity is no more...

The Cacti warriors defend the breach, but they cannot give you long if the Sand Worm heads their way... What now?

Again I look to time to solve our problems. I wish to use Backstep to go back to before the battle, taking my fellow wizards and cacti warriors and as many Elven fighters as I can round up. We will go back, recruit our younger selves and Sylvos (showing key as proof), and make our way to the beast's lair. Confront it before it attacks the elves. Make sure it doesn't go for the city.

It's not exactly time travel. The Goblin army has been here for days so going back one hour will not help. You will not encounter younger selves if you use backstep. Dead people do return to life if used properly though.

Andon casts Backstep for a second time, slamming his staff to the ground and grey mist rises up. When it recedes, everything is back to its pristine normal self. The Undercity remains whole, torches lighting the underground city. The sound of thousands of Goblin thronging outside the walls is mildly distressing however..

You tell the Duke of your plan but he can't spare any of his meager forces as the Goblin army looms near. He orders Sylvos to bring you to the royal armory where the party is given a legendary blade, a two-handed elvish broadsword called the Slayer, said to be able to cut through any armor.

"Now my friends - who shall wield it as we go to the dragon's den?"

Meanwhile, back in the desert..

Scared shitless by the rumbling cave, R'rud rouses the party and gets them out, and just before time as the cave collapses behind them. The Duchess is afraid and her son even more so, as they seem to be running from danger to danger. They're more eager to press on now but perhaps finding another camp is better than running in the middle of the night?

I can take the sword. This is my plan, I should take the greatest risks.

(And out of character - I ALSO have the highest armor rating, so I'm the best tank out of all of us).

As the Wurm is in the ruins of the old city, I think there'll be some growth that we can turn into Things with Swords. We may be able to help these elves most by having the Cacti Warriors stay with them. At the very least it will boost their morale.

There's still wolves/hyenas out there. We need to find some safety.

Can we start another fire out here? If there anything else that looks like shelter around?
