My niece just asked me over Gmail chat if I know of a game for two players who are on two different computers. She is 8, and oh so smart.
Can you guys think of any?
Oh btw, did you hear about his awesome dad?

Chess? Or (the arguably better) Go?
Is she looking for something to play with someone specific, or someone random? I would be careful with the latter - internet can be a dangerous place if you don't know what to be wary of.
Great link BTW!

Go is a great game. There are websites you can play it online. It will get you both thinking.
Here is a very good tutorial -
http://playgo.to/iwtg/en/I guess you would want something turn based?

At that age I played a lot Descent with my father. That's not multiplayer, but we played it on the same computer

Wait, two different computers or the same computer?
If it's different ones, then anything that uses LAN (Allegiance, Netgammon, LoL, etc). On the same computer you could try out plugging a gamepad which you give to her and you take the keyboard to play anything on zsnes, Project 64, etc.

Terraria and Minecraft come to mind first.
