Allegiance

Once again a bunch of changes were done to the game in a dark room.
Once again the way it was communicated to the community was underwhelming
Once again they are asking everyone to make an effort without making the implementation bullet proof
Once again they want people to volunteer to do something that is not seamless and liable to screw up their fun time

It has never worked in a decade so why would they expect anything to change now?

OK I feel better both with my decision to stop playing and venting my spleen about something I should have stopped caring about long ago

From a code development standpoint alone.

Allegiance's development problem is that it hasn't got one voice in charge of Development who has a plan.

It hasn't since Dogbones and Kage were pretty active (so since 2008-9 or earlier)?

Need some-one sane with ideas to actually improve the game-play to start off by saying, "this is the game-play I want, I'm going to implement it, who is going to help me?"

(they don't all need to be good ideas even)

Imago was closest to that in some ways, but he spectacularly failed the sane test, and was an utter ass-hole with it too.

All we end up with is piece meal bullshit changes that are often unasked for.

It's a crying shame - but in the Free to play era Allegiance needs to radically change to survive, and there's no real feel of that anywhere.

As  I keep saying, all of this effort wasted on developing current alleg could have been spent on organised alleg2. Iv seen so many people fail simply because they either can come up with random ideas but no clue on how to implement it, others who would could implement but had no clue on game design, and rest would just get pooed on on the forums for even bothering.

Either that, or those bankrolling the servers actually getting behind and supporting those doing work on the game. What allegiance needed was active mods that enforced good behaviour.

I know I myself and DasSmiter got gradually worn down by the un-checked personal attacks and pigheaded, irrational resistance of a vocal minority. The game was quite fixable and salvageable, but who the f*** would put up with that, year after year?

Thats also wrong approach Adept. Strict moderation brings a lot of negativity to the community as a whole. The way I see a lot of OSS projects go is in the direction where the engine is detached from the game itself. That way you can split away from those who get heated about gameplay, and those who prefer to contribute to the project, be that bug reports or actual code.

If we had something along the lines of SPACE ENGINE -> Various mods (one of which recreates Alleg) you would have development team pretty much entirely isolated from the players by a layer of "modders" who create the actual games and would request features from devs, as well as manage their own respective communities. Current alleg core devs would be those types of people, but I am talking well beyond core dev here, something closer to taking say quake 3 engine and making urban terror out of it (without engine changes).

In all honesty, the only person in the last 5 years who knew the code well, knew the game well and could pass any sort of sanity test is Kage. Unfortunately Kage has a massive chip on his shoulder over the way he has been treated by Pook/Thal/TE/whoever and isn't prepared to play nicely without getting everything exactly his own way.

I agree with nj's assessment of what happened. Imago was the only meaningful developer but frankly I wouldn't trust him to look after a rock for 5 minutes let alone produce code that would be running on people's personal computers.

Communication is a pain. I'm fully with MrC on this one and when I was ZL I tried to keep my zone's activities well in the public eye (of course, events was easily the most visible Zone by definition but the point still stands). A regular blog from the Dev lead would be a good way to say what's going on and why. The current senate system is a disaster from this POV. Having recognised the mistakes made by the ZL system, particularly at the end, I tried to get Dome to let people know what was happening but basically nothing ever came out. It doesn't concern me anymore, I'm not losing sleep over Allegiance nowadays and I'm not going to start again, but it's a shame that seemingly nobody cares enough to make an effort anymore.

I've been enjoying getting back into the Allegiance addiction. Y'all should come back and we can reform RT2.0 ;)

That isn't really a joke. You should come back. Yes, you. ;)

Occasionally good weeknight games. Had a few 9v9's or so last night, but can't really expect that every night still.

It would be interesting to fly with my HOTAS - maybe I'll try it out at the weekend.

My joystick doesn't work with my Lenovo T61 or Lenovo T440 so I'm out of flying games for now.
