Pen and Paper RPG

Would anyone here be interested in playing a pen-and-paper RPG predominantly via play-by-post? Like, the players and GM/DM/moderator/storyteller all play primarily via forum posts. It's a slow method, especially for combat, but doable.

If so, who is interested? And what system?  ;D

Yes. But, caveat: combat is atrocious for a post system. It's not impossible to schedule an irc session to do combats when they happen.

As far as systems go, I'm open for suggestions.

As im a very active RPG-player and Gamemaster since over 15 years: Post Systems mostly run into inactivity . First one player falls off and posts unregularly and then veryone waits for an answer from him and so on ...
Actually im playing with a group via skype with webcams. This works out very well and is much more personel and closer to real P&P group. If you want to build up a long living group with roleplaying depth then use a voice system with appointsments. (There are also some dice rolling tools around if u dont trust each other enough and want to control there roles)

Dengaroth ran an awesome Shadowrun campaign for a few of us a few years back using a Python application designed for it.  It had a map area, we could upload graphics to use as minis, inbuilt dicerollers and an IRC style chat system.  The game played slow as we were using text to communicate, but that also encouraged us to be very descriptive in our actions.  "I shoot the guy" becomes "Blaze took a quick glance around the combat zone and decided the security guard with the uzi was the primary threat.  Levelling his pistol he muttered a quick prayer under his breath and squeezed the trigger..." <diceroll here>

Wyld... I know what system you're talking about but cannot remember the name. Argh!

I think OpenRPG was the program Denga used.

MapTools works too, only because it has so much support for it.

Personally I'd want to do something that's mostly play-by-post with a posting regularity of once-a-day or every-other-day expected from the players. The idea of occasionally meeting up for the larger combats is good too.

As for non play-by-post (either constant sessions via descriptive text like Denga used to do, or the much more rapid and personal Skype sessions as Fazz suggested), I'm not sure if I have the time.

Whether play-by-post or otherwise, as with any potential group, it'd be best to initially think not so much in terms of campaigns, but in terms of one-shot scenarios. Makes players dropping out easier to accommodate and makes the whole thing less stressful.

As for traditional systems, I am either slightly familiar with or have an interest in:
-Shadowrun 4th Edition
-D&D 4th Edition
-D&D 3.x/Pathfinder if we all agree to be a certain tier or below (I think on the interwebz it's accepted that some classes like Wizard are Tier 1 or God-Tier, while regular old fighters are more along the lines of Tier 3 or average-tier)
-Paranoia

As for non-traditional and/or more silly or free-form oriented systems:
-Primetime Adventures
-Kobolds Ate My Baby!
-Don't Rest Your Head
-Monsters and Other Childish Things

As for potential ideas/settings I'm interested in running or seeing others run(assuming a system with a GM is picked):
-Recently saw Sword Art Online (a terrible anime with a cool premise) and have been wanting to get into .hack//Sign.

Basically the premise would be the characters are all stuck in a virtual reality MMORPG and can't log out. To me the neatest part of this concept is that the characters would be able to openly talk out loud about the system's rules. For example, if we pick D&D, we can talk out loud about hit points. The concept of XP to level up would be universally known... cue religions and serial-killer based on Highlander philosophy, etc. etc.

-Anything like Paranoia, where the players might secretly be working with/against each other.  :P

---

I'm interested in participating in anything with you guys though so please chime in.  :)

I'm not going to do a purely play-by-post system. Main reason being that they take foreverevem when people DO post. Multiple weeks to do a single, simple combat is simply not enjoyable to me.

I'd love to something more akin to a real P&P group, because I've only ever played one before and want to play more. I know that Woolfben is interested as well.

I'd be well interesting in trying out Shadow Run or D&D, if someone wants to Gamemaster and doesn't mind putting up with a pair of noobs.

I've heard it's pretty good. Also heard good things about the Iron Kingdoms one as well.
