D10 Blood Bowl - I need help

Postby Raveen » Wed Feb 03, 2016 12:24 pm

So, an idle thought has progressed into something a bit more solid. Essentially I wanted to add a bit more granularity to BB by moving it from D6 to D10 for as much as possible.

Oh and I want it on a hex grid pitch too.

I've worked out d10 agility rolls and movement stays the same. I'm not sure what to do with blocking. again, I'd like more granularity (so there's more variation but of lesser degrees) but I can't think of a good blocking mechanism to work with that. Any thoughts?

Armour (or Toughness as I've dubbed it so far) is another tricky one. Do I stick with 2d6? or try 1d10 or 2d10?

I've roughed up some rosters too and tried to set a formula for player costs.

Spreadsheet and pitch image attached.

If you wanted to do some BB alike coding Id3 we could take this further...

Blocking... I'm not too sure what you're asking for. Are you still sticking with the 1d/2d/3d thing? I think that works rather well. If you wanted new sides to your dice, how about a wrestle outcome that doesn't require a wrestle skill? Or a "miss" - the player takes a swing but doesn't connect - result being nothing?

Thoughts regarding armour - I like the 2D6 and the consequent curve of probability it produces... that armour 8 is a lot better than armour 6, but the gap between AV 8 and AV10 is not as big.

Happy to chat as I play a lot of board games, think I have a decent understanding of what makes for a good game, & whilst I haven't designed a game myself I have designed the odd variant or two.

The current blocking system works well but effectively only has ST values of 2-6 as meaningful. I'd like there to be more variation both between and within races. So givcing an Orc Lineman St 3.5 for example, of giving blitzers a slight St boost compared to linos. But doing that skews the current mechanism as any greater strength, even .5, gives a whole new block dice. So is there some other mechanism that we could think of to work?

I think the current mechanic is brilliant so I don't really want ot change it for changes sake, but I would like a little more variation.

Armour again, it's not broken so why fix it is a very valid argument. I figured that if I was going for a D10 rewrite then Armour could well be included in that. But I'm not sure whether 2D10 is actually any better than 2D6.

First idea about block dice... how about if your strength is only slightly higher than your opponent, you need to pass a D10 roll in order to roll 2 block dice? For example...
ST diff # of block dice rolled
0 1 dice
0.5 roll D10. If 7+, roll 2 dice, else roll 1 dice
1 roll D10. If 4+, roll 2 dice, else roll 1 dice
1.5+ 2 dice
... with the conditions required for having 3 block dice being the same?

Above chart assumes a reworking of character's strength values somewhat. eg it still feels right that a Nurgle Warrior should always get 2 dice against your standard elf/human/skaven lineman.

As logical as that sounds, I'd be against any further complication of the game. Unless a reliable software client did it all for you. But even then, you need to understand the rules a bit.

Arg my other reply got lost.

It involved the skill Block working in the same way a bit as a small difference in strength within races.

Arguably the same could be said for teh AG rolls.

The difference in probability of making a pass or dodge with AG4 players compared to AG3 is quite Vast really....

What about scatter rolls? Those are d8, is there a way to make it d10?

No, they would be D6 as it's a hexagonal map.

la - yes more complication, that's the downside. Two points though.
1) It's not dissimilar to a Dauntless - so not an entirely new mechanic
2) a "block action" can involve a lot of dice rolls already, what's one more?! This is an extreme example but I can think of 11 dice rolls coming from a simple "I want to block that player" action
nega-trait
foul appearance
block (ends in a push)
frenzy = another block
loner pass, enabling...
... block dice re-rolled
injury roll
re-rolled with piling on
casualty roll
injury type
apothacary

I was thinking about maybe having two types of block dice, the standard ones but also a different coloured one that can be rolled as the second die when the St difference is small that had different proportions of sides to it.

Mostly an intellectual exercise to see if it could work to be honest :)

Yes; that fits the topic much better.
