Awards for player/teams

Postby Gandalf » Sat Mar 05, 2016 11:17 pm

As mentioned elsewhere I want to give awards out to players/teams. I'm concentrating on players for now - teams will come later. These will be visible on the player's own page on BBDB and will be something for their coach to be proud of! It's also a form of data visualisation - it's all well and good to see lots of numbers but to look up Gertrude and see all those awards she has won means more - and feels more real - than a list of numbers.

I have 3 broad categories in my mind.
- Seasonal, given for the top 3 in various charts. This would apply only to leagues, not cups, as number of games played per team is too skewed, one team's players would probably take over half of the awards.
- Longevity - bronze, silver and gold awards for reaching certain landmarks in touchdowns, casualties etc. I have set the levels based on the data currently visible on BBDB. Gold is supposed to be a real challenge - in some categories some players have achieved gold, and in others no-one has yet. Sometimes the gap between gold & silver is bigger than that between silver & gold as they are supposed to be that more challenging. The "getting hit" awards are less than the "being hit" ones as there is only so many times you can be hit and still survive. eg the gold award for injuries sustained is set at 10, achieved by 3 players so far, it's going to be hard to get beyond that as you've probably suffered some career-ending injury by then. I could always add a "Platinum" tier above gold later on if that makes sense.
- Other - these won't be added initially but are an aspiration for a future development run.

I want the details of the awards to be visible on the website so I've put the list of proposed awards there rather than here. Eventually you'll be able to click through from there and see what players have what awards, as well as viewing them from the individual player pages.

Thoughts?

Nice idea.

Except can we have a boring mid-table award, as the DElves are resolutely mid-table in every category :-)

You're joint second for most catches! And I'm sure you could pass it further if you want. :D You also have the most injured player http://gandalfgames.net/bbdb/competitio ... ition_id=8

Everyone is good at something :)

I'm going to use this award functionality to have a list of team honours too - ie "Winners of Season 7 League, runners up of Season 7 cup" which you will see on the teams page.

Opinions... should I apply team/player awards to Season 6 league? It's missing 2 matches which I couldn't find to upload, despite chatting with the relevant managers. My instinct would be not to do it... it's not really fair on the 4 teams who are missing a match.

On a side note, I was planning to dummy in those missing results, but with the loss of BB Manager I don't even know what those scorelines were. So if you know what the scorelines from those 2 games were, let me know.

Isa Black Stars 0-2 The 13th Doomwheel - viewtopic.php?f=14&t=399&start=45#p8734

Azgorh Rock-Knockers 0-2 E.L.O - viewtopic.php?f=14&t=399&start=120#p8961

The Chorf / Orc game was a crash and the replay doesn't work so we can't get that in properly (I can email over the replay file if you like and see if any data can be salvaged?). I remember it being an awesome game though!

Thanks for the scorelines :)

Sure, send me the file. Not sure if/when I will look at it though. If i I do get something out it will be excluding the dice analysis, but that's OK from an awards perspective.

Still looking for opinions here.

I'm almost at the place where I can dish out the player competition-based awards now, and will do so for Season 7 league (Alan will be getting two first place awards :D), and season 8 when it finishes.

Longevity awards and team awards next on the schedule...

I don't mind too much if you do (and I say that as one of the teams who would be missing a game)
