Funded! Now we'll see if the £1.5 M goal is reached for even more playable goodness right away.
Anyway, I suspect this will be a major game for us in two years time, hence I wanted to put this up here.
Last hours to be a part of the kickstarter. I went for a Federal Trader level with £37

Re: Elite: Dangerous
I have a sneaking suspicion that Bell was the man behind a lot of the fun stuff in Elite which is why all Elite games since the first have been a bit disappointing. I'd be happy to be wrong though.
Re: Elite: Dangerous
If I was the only RT to kick a few quid into the kickstarter, then ignore this message. Incase I wasn't there's something you want to do.
The rewards app is online, and you can pick your rewards and reserve your pilot name (if you pledged enough for that).

Re: Elite: Dangerous
I have some promising info.
The game will have an allegiance like newtonian-with-top-speed flight model. The absolute maximum in the system is 500 m/s, which we know is a _lot_ for Allegiance style. Six degrees of freedom is also pretty much confirmed by the devs, so this should turn out to be a game that we like to fly around in.
I think we'll have a chance to meet in space again in about a year's time.

You can still buy in at £30. I suspect the eventual retail price will be a little higher, but not by much. I went with Federal Trader for £37

Re: Elite: Dangerous
Elite: Danerous Alpha has started. The cost to be involved in this is an insane 200£, but here's some footage via the latest dev diary.

Re: Elite: Dangerous - now in Alpha
If this doesn't get you guys interested, I officially give up.
Here's an awesome Rock-Paper-Shotgun article on the game. http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/12 ... dangerous/
Here is some nice footage showing a gimballed laser and missiles combo: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/12 ... dangerous/
And here's somebody flying with the flight assist off, think of turning on vector lock in Allegiance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1KAJuR5giGo

If this doesn't get you guys interested, I don't think anything will anymore.

Re: Elite: Dangerous - now in Alpha
if it makes you feel better Adept it was specifically you that got me interested in the game

Disclaimer: I have commited to watching every episode of Doctor Who starting at the beginning. Please feel free to ccomment alongmy journey but please no spoilers of any kind and htis includes discussions of anything forward of where I am at that time. No writer X vs writer Z comparisons, no vague references to things to come, no wink nudge nudges even please. The request is if you are in doubt about if I have seen it yet than do not mention it please. Spoliers are really spolers for me and I hate to know what is about to happen. I will faithfully update where in the series I am and the goal is to watch the entire series before the New Year. *gulp* Oh boy About twenty hours a week is what a quick look online is telling me and quite alot of the dear Doctor no matter how much I may come to love the series. Man I hope I end up liking the darn thing... oh boy

Success!
And just for that, here's one more video. Here the player with his two escorts is tasked with destroying an Anaconda (a heap big freighter, kitted out as a gunship) which has a wing of four carrier fighters (think Starfuries) as escorts.
Rather than attacking the target the player takes the opportunity to go take a really good look at the Anaconda model.... and WOW! The heat vents, the noise! (I know it's in space, but they've decided that the ships computer takes a lot of the sensor information and feeds it as sound to the pilot... so I guess you are hearing the EM emissions and such of the engines).

Re: Elite: Dangerous - now in Alpha
It looks fun, but I'm always nervous about the MMORPG model as I have neither the time and finances to get really good, and can get tired rather quickly of people who have either or both easily dominating me in game.
I'll probably give it a try, but <shrug>

Here's the beauty of it my friend. You can run it on your own computer, like a traditional Elite game. If you are not interested in any MMO stuff, you can completely opt out.
You can also go in partially. You can join the persistent universe, but only interact with non-NPCs according to your contact list. No need to interact with the unwashed masses, but you still get to do PvE cooperation with your friends.
***
Besides, this will not be "EvE with cockpits". The dynamic instancing is capped at about 28 humans max, and there are quite severe repecussions for bad behaviour. Actually pirates need to get you to jettison cargo for them, and if they kill you, they get quite serious bounties on their heads.
I linked some "Death in Elite" stuff on Facebook as well, if you want more detail.
***
TL:DR version. It's not a dog-eat-dog world, and you should do just fine. All those years of Allegiance should give you a nice leg up.
