Season 2 feedback

Postby Raveen » Fri Jun 13, 2014 12:29 pm

Hello chaps, as we're nearing the end of season 2 I'd like to invite you all to feed back on how you've found the season. Particularly with a view to understanding if you enjoyed the setup and schedule. What worked, what didn't and what are the lessons to take away for next season?

Cheers!

I've really enjoyed it Raveen, thanks for organising it!

My request for the next season would be that the results of the group stages have more of an effect on who you play in the knock-outs.

I think some people should be knocked out at the group stage.

eg if we have 2 groups of 5, then top 4 go through. 2 groups of 4, then top 2 go through. The teams that don't go through can always have a "placing match" the next week so they at least get another game, eg in the former example, the bottom teams can play off for last place, before spectating the latter stage(s).

Schedule was fine for me, but I don't think my sort-of interested friend would be able to keep up to the speed of schedule.

Everything else seemed fine to me.

I agree with that. Felt a bit weird that a team that won 3 games could get knocked out in the first knockout round and be somehow viewed as a worse team than the team who had just had their first win in terms of the tournament...

Yeah that was purely down to the number of teams we have. 8 teams makes for an obvious knockout phase but renders the group stage competitionaly weak. Of course it's important to get development in otherwise we could have jumped straight to knockout.

Assuming we have 8 teams next time would it be better to lose the first game of the knockout and go straight to the semi finals?

We can do semi finals, and a 5-8 knockout stage as well.

The thing with this is... would you rather play the 5th/6th match playoff or watch the grand final? Plus this only works (easily) if you have 8 teams.

Could you do a single league where the top 2 or 4 then have a play-off for the title? Or is that too many games/commitment for some?

edit:
I forgot to add: thank you very much for organising the league, and thank you for letting me play - hadn't played bb online before and really enjoyed it.

It would be good to know how many people want to play the next season so we can make decisions about how to structure it. That or we should go with something that works well with an odd number of players.

I'm quite happy to play more matches, so a single league would be fine with me!

I propose season 3 starts, at the earliest, 6th July, with a break on the 13th July. This is to avoid clashes with big World Cup matches.

I wouldn't mind one big league, but some people wanted a smaller, quicker league.

It was good to have you aboard!  :D

We could just wait until after the world cup...

Sure that's an option too. I said what I said because there are no world cup games on the 6th, and I thought some people might think the 20th is a bit too far away.

I'm happy to go with what people want.

The advantage of shorter seasons is that if people lose interest then there's less of a problem if they drop out, and less time for them to lose interest in in the first place.

If people are happy to sign up to a longer schedule then I'm all for it.

I'd be up for a longer schedule.

If we are having one Large League we could just have a Fixed Length League, and not have a Knockout stage.

7 matches each is plenty, and only 1 more than the winners played in the last tournament. The top of the league team after that many matches probably deserves to win something.

OK anyone who isn't happy with a 1 game league should post asap. If not I'll open up sign ups and start on the schedule.
