Elite: Dangerous - OUT NOW!
Re: Elite: Dangerous - OUT NOW!
50 grand I got fined for carrying that dodgy Platinum! I just found it like, I never nicked it but them coppers never give an honest businessman a fair chance do they?
Re: Elite: Dangerous - OUT NOW!
Smuggling Platinum is one of my favourite things to do if I find it. Just a shame I don't have a bigger hold.
Re: Elite: Dangerous - OUT NOW!
Smuggling can indeed to south really quickly. I wish I knew if a chaff launcher can be used to break a cargo scan. Silent running and a heat sink is often good enough to throw them off, but boy is it expensive when you get caught. There's a serious reputation hit as well.

How I flight starships?
Long-time Elite commander here, from waaay back in the 8-bit era. A recent hardware upgrade means I'm finally able to join the latest generation of Cobra pilots. If there's any fellow RTs or friends thereof still playing, hit me up on Steam or in-game. I'm also lurking on the Mumble channel when I remember it's there. You'll all be shocked to learn that my in-game nick is Wyld Karde.

Awesome! Add me as a friend. Name of Adept, obviously. Federal trader, bounty hunter and soldier of fortune. Also a somewhat incompetent smuggler, which the reason the Feds are only lukewarm to me, despite me being holding Chief Petty Officer rank in the navy irregulars.
Re: Elite: Dangerous - OUT NOW!
Imperial trader and general odd job man Raveen here. For s good time on the edge of imperial space come to Chimiri and bring marine equipment to Rigaux Ring.
Re: Elite: Dangerous - OUT NOW!
I wonder if I'm the only Federal stooge in RT

Re: Elite: Dangerous - OUT NOW!
Had a good chat with Adept on in game coms yesterday. I've decided to put my career on hold and do a bit of rare trading to build a bank balance so I can afford that Imperial Clipper I need so much.

That is EXACTLY what I am doing. Got a Type 6, and am now plodding around building up money.

Re: Elite: Dangerous - OUT NOW!
Quick protip: The 100 ton cargo mark, around the Type 6 or trade fitted Asp level, is where it's worth considering switching from rares trading to commodities, at least in terms of credits per hour earned. A well chosen route (Station A has something expensive in high demand that station B has in high supply, and vice-versa) can match or beat out rares trading if you're shifting the commodities in bulk. If you go even larger (ie, you get a Type 7) then definitely switch over to trading in commodities. I'm currently flying a Type 7 with a 200 ton hold to shuttle goods over a 30 ly, 4 jump route and I'm pulling in somewhere around 300-400k per round trip. Once I've got enough cash to go from a B to an A grade FSD that'll cut a jump or two off the route and speed up the profit still further. Even in a slow-ass Lakon 7 that's a much faster rate of profit than I could get trading rares in a trade fitted Asp. The downside is that a well fitted (for trading, so lots of D grade modules) Type 7 has an insurance buy back of just over a million creds, which means I have to stop and check any major expenditure because I'm not flying a ship worth over 20 million creds without insurance.
Mind you, shuttling back and forth can get a bit dull, but that's what podcasts are for. Or just buy and fit a Viper to take out to shot some mans from time to time. I'm not particularly working toward a given goal at the moment, just building up my cash reserves against future expenditure, so there's no real pressure to keep trading when I want a change of pace.

Re: Elite: Dangerous - OUT NOW!
I'm fond of the Steam overlay's browser for my long-dull-boring bits of the trip. Fun fact: Ships still respond to all joystick controls while the overlay is up.
Re: Elite: Dangerous - OUT NOW!
I fly in borderless windowed mode with a trade calculator and browser on the other monitor. Mostly the browser is for the tedious fuel scooping stops.
Does trading with a faction boost your rep with them? So even though it's a long way, is there a benefit to trading rares with an imperial system?

Yes. I think at least selling stuff for a profit boosts your rep with the faction owning the station. Imperial aligned minor factions also transfer that rep boost (or a little fraction of it) to your overall imperial rep. Remember that getting caught smuggling in Imperial jurisdiction gives a hefty hit to your Imp rep. The man is always trying to keep the little guy down...
Re: Elite: Dangerous - OUT NOW!
Rav, I presume you are Raveen in-game? I sent you a friend request, I'm CMDR Three. Selling up here and heading over to Chimiri - maybe you are still there... it's only 172.28 LY from me.
