BB Match Reports - 10th Feb

Postby Wyld Karde » Sun Feb 10, 2013 12:38 pm

Astrogranite Apocalypse (Chaos) vs Dodge n Splodge (High Elves)

When a bashy team goes up against elfballers, it's almost always a one sided result.  Either the bashy team crumps the elfballers into the pitch, or the elfballers dance around the bashers to score lots of touchdowns.

Sadly, the dice were not with LtSpinx today.  His halfling master chef underperformed, only stealing one re-roll in the first half and none in the second.  Poor luck when dodging combined with some desperate 1 dice block attempts meant the elves spent much of the match KO'd in the dugout, allowing the Astrogranite Apocalypse to score three touchdowns with Beastman Jimmy Graves.  As the final insult, Graves was named man of the match for chaos, allowing him to level up twice off a single match.

I feel a bit bad about this.  A 1500 point Chaos team was always going to outplay a starting team of elves.  Inducement cash can only do so much, and if the halfling master chef lets you down you've wasted most of the bonus.  To make things worse, the rest of the cash was spent on apothecaries, and the worst injuries inflicted were all KOs.

In the end, some unlucky dice rolls and one or two questionable coaching decisions forced Spinx into some desperate plays, which of course lead to more bad luck as those plays didn't work out.  His team was simply outmatched and this was an unfair, one sided drubbing.

Well. With opposition like that, I was expecting to have to recover my team from the field in a single soup tin.

Sounds like Adept's Halfpints need to put a hit on Jimmy Graves Wyld. Get ready for a sound kicking.

Gandalf's Skaven vs Adept's Halflings

First Half

Gandalf chooses to receive. Can't remember the precise details but I got off to a good start, scoring on the 2nd or 3rd round in typical Skaven style.
Then I was kicking off but stupidly left my guy with the kicking skill on the front line, meaning he couldn't use his skill. A ferocious few round happened with lots of kicking. The dice were not against me as much this game, and I inflected a few injuries/KO's. I still took a a couple myself though, eg Pinky the Rat Ogre was off until the second half. Still, it was nothing like the un-natural beatings my players took the last time these 2 teams met. Kicking halflings is of limited use though as they always have more to come on after the next drive. I scored again before the half was up to make it 2-0.

Second Half

This was a lot of fun and it was end to end stuff. I kicked off, the halfing cought the ball partly thanks to the kick-off roll but failed a pass. On my turn I forced a gap in the front line and sent a gutter around, and picked it up from under the halfling's nose. I didn't think I had a chance of scoring from there though - I was too deep and isolated in Halfling territory, too many halflings around - so I threw the ball away towards the far corner to delay any counter-attack. On Adept's turn he tried to give the gutter runner a kicking, but no KO/injury was achieved. In the space of 2 turns he succeeded in getting the ball from one length of the board to the other, thanks to some hand-offs, possibly a short pass and by circumventing the melee in the middle of the board thanks to bring thrown over them all by a treeman (I love that animation! Even though it hurts my team I want to see those crazy throws come off!)

Even with two go-for-its he couldn't quite make it to the finish line, he was one square short. On my next go Gutter Runner 2 and The Brain closed him down, and fortunately managed to knock him over to avoid the certain touchdown. With players all over the place this was a great situation for the Skaven and I succeeded in taking it from 1 touchdown area to the other in 1 go. The Brain ran the width of the pitch to get a clean throw to a guy in the middle of the pitch (who Adept was marking previously but left him), this throw only needed a 3+ but it took 3 rolls to make it work. He then ran most of the way to the touchdown area before handing it off to my gutter runner who showed off by running the width of the pitch into the corner :D In the space of 6 or so turns the ball had gone from the edge of one touchdown zone to the other and back again. Great spectator sport for those who enjoy the ball-oriented part of the game.

This left 3 or 4 turns of the game, some more thumping was done and the halfings showed their poor handling skills again (though they were actually not bad in this regard for most of the match). Adept's treeman did a foul but got sent off for it - this despite having a bribe! (ie he rolled a 1 on a D6 to fail the bribe) I tried a 1-in-20 chance for a TD on the last turn (dodge, 5+ pickup, long pass) but twas not to be. I also tried kicking his treemen a few times when they were down, but with an armour value of 10 it's fairly pointless. It felt good trying though, given the constant hacking attempts against my rats (especially the gutter runners).

It finished 3-0, and although I had 3 rats knocked out of the game, none were seriously injured. It was very nearly 2-1 though with a few rounds left though so the halflings could still have got something from it. The halflings have 2 or 3 out for the next match I think.

My Stormvermin got an upgrade after the match, I rolled a double and took Foul Appearance. Adept also told me a tale of woe whereby he rolled an 11, which lets you get +1 Agility, but it was on his treeman (agility = 1). Sad that such a great roll was on such a poor character.
