A violent 2-1 win against the Cangurus saw the Mighty Undercheesers clinch their place in the final.

Image

In the first half, the Underworld gathered the kick and made off down their right, only for the ball to get popped loose by some dodging elvenness and a massive melee to develop. This didn't work out terribly well for the Elves, as several of them got a bit injured and eventually the Skaven Thrower Jim Morrison grabbed the ball and ran off. He scored in Turn 8, and the Elves couldn't equalise before half time.

I think at this point there were 3 Elves injured out and 4 (?) KO'd - Idan set up with 8 or 9 against the Undercheesers' 11. They received and dodged 3 receivers into the Underworld half - I marked one, and forgot to mark another, getting slightly too focused on fouling one of the Elves' monstrous blitzers. This failed when David Bowie went really stupid (1) leaving a goblin to have to dodge away to complete the 8 assist foul. The goblin KO'd himself instead! The Elves scored.

Again, Idan set up with 8 or 9 against my 11, and the Underworld received, grabbed the ball, and made their way down the left, I think. The hideous Elven blitzers approached, whilst the lovely Skaven blitzers, Lou Reed at the front, smashed a way through. At one point Idan got his block sidestep dodge (ST4 or AG5?) blitzer marking the ballcarrier, but suddenly a bolt of lightning smacked him to the ground, and Jim Morrison escaped!

With only 5 players left on the pitch, Idan still managed to dodge, dodge, dodge, GFI, GFI and 1d blitz wrestle Morrison to the ground! The crowd held their breath - and Lou Reed picked up the ball instead! He scored in the last turn of the game, and the Mighty Undercheesers were through!

Good game Idan!

We seem to be getting some great matches in the cup so far....

Here's my/Rav's effort, it went into extra time, will post a match report up tomorrow....
(BTW I think the BBM stats don't work properly for extra time.... I can point out a few of these numbers that are wrong... such as 1 touchdown each ::) )

Carrions Out in Extra Time Thriller!

What an absolute classic! The Carrions and the Wanderers have always been Chalk and Cheese (we're the hard, bony chalk, they're the smelly, soft and tasty cheese). The Elves were all about the dodging and the running and passing. The Khemri were of a mood to plod and hit and foul where possible.

The Carrions received in the first half and the ball was kicked very deep. We wanted to smack Alan because his continued existence offends us and got a KO by piling on. This was probably a mistake as it pulled the formation forward, away from the ball. More hitting ensued where possible. Both Thro-Ras dropped back to the ball but were unable to pick up straight away scattering the ball into my endzone. In my second turn I started building a screen on my left flank to move the ball into. The pickup was now risky because a failed pickup might scatter off the pitch, which would essentially hand the Elves a TD. Luckily the Thro-Ra scooped the ball safely and moved up.

After a turn or too the ball was at midpitch and I was starting to engage the elves properly but they were slowing me down. Gandalf misclicked End Turn when going for one of his players and I couldn't afford to miss a turn to balance things out.

The Khemri broke through and got into scoring range in turn 6. The elves were, so I thought, tied up and I settled into some hitting. Unfortunately a thrower and Ernie the Catcher got free (partly because I blocked the catcher into range, oops!) and blitzed my ball carrier down. Not all was lost and I moved a BLitz-Ra into range to assist a block to free up the ball and failed the GFI needed twice. Luckily the Elves weren't quite able to get the ball the whole length of the pitch and the Half ended 0-0

The second half saw me kicking to the Elves and they scored comfortably (sorry, I don't recall the details).

I received a kickoff with 4 turns left to score. This is as quick as Khemri ever go so I needed to get a move on. I drove up the left flank again and the Elves were doing their best to slow me down again. In the end I was able to break out the cage of fallen elf bodies and double GFI to score as the whistle blew.

Full Time 1-1 - I thought this would have been a fair score for the game but we're in the playoffs so extra time ensued.

I kicked to the elves and set up to defend deep. Gandalf retrieved the ball and started his Treeman lumbering forward into my formation, opening up a gap in the middle. The Elves flooded into the middle and also down my left. I marked up the potential receivers and blocked where I could. At the end of my third turn of overtime I risked a 1D block and rolled a skull (having already rerolled something else that turn). With a sense of inevitability the Elves pounced and moved the ball over and through the gap this produced to score.

Final score 2-1 to the Wanderers.

Overall this was a great match. Gandalf didn't give me many or any opportunities to smack his players about or get fouls in which meant his team stayed on the pitch longer, turning the balance. I made two mistakes - pushing Ernie into blitzing range of my ball carrier and that 1D block at the end and was rightfully punished as a result. Good game and a deserving finalist.

(Rav posted his response whilst I was typing mine out...)

Pre-match

The talk among the pundits was about the 2-0 win the Khemri had last time these two teams met, a mere 2 matchdays ago. This time though, it was thought the match would be quite different due to the Wood Elves having two players back from injury - Bee Tiered the Treeman - crucial to holding the line aginst the Tomb Guardians, and also their kicker, who would make life difficult for the Khemri, what with their poor ball-handling skills and slow players. The elves kept up their long-standing tradition of having one player injured for the game, this time it was a Wardancer. They also considered firing one of their temps, to keep their team value down, but, remembering the issues they had with a lack of numbers in their last match, decided to keep all 13 players.
The Khemri took their normal inducements, that is to say, a wizard, a bribe and a babe (not sure the latter two ever got used?)

First half

Elves won the toss and kicked off, the ball landing satisfyingly deep in the Khemri backfield. They took a couple of turns to secure the ball, which gave the Elves a chance to get in there and disrupt, however the attempts failed and the elves backed off, their team suprisingly still intact. By turn 4 the Khemri were approaching the half-way line as the elves attempted to get people in the way, though they didn't do a terribly good job of it. This was made harder with about 7 Khemri on the ball, though 2 of the Tomb Guardians were busy trying to smash the catchers around, and the Treeman had taken root.

Then came a tactical blunder as the Elf coach inadvertently signalled the end of his turn, despite not actually having done anything. Raveen said his team was too slow to consider skipping his turn too, which is fair enough. So come the end of turn 6 we had the situation of the Khemri ball carrier being 3 squares from the endzone all by himself, as Rav thought he was safe. The main body of Khemri were 4-5 squares away near the half-way line, holding up the elves / standing around their bodies. However the Tomb Guardian / elf catcher bashing meant that the top scorer in the history of RT Blood Bowl, the incredible Ernie, had been pushed just into range of the ball carrier. I even had another elf who could just get there too - so in a flurry of dodge/GFI rolls I had a 2-dice block on the ball carrier, and managed to get him down! The ball was loose but I had no-one who was in range to pick it up - but I had 2 people close to it.

Turn 7 Khemri - a Khemri tried to blitz in from his mass of players but fell over (the first of two failed GFI's for Rav - both after re-rolls!), then a bolt of lightening knocked over one of my two players near the ball. So then it was my turn 7 and a real chance to score with a pass/run/hand-off. I picked the ball up, moved into place to throw the ball... but fell over on a GFI getting into position. Rav didn't have anyone able to score in turn 8 so he tried to make it hard for me to score in my turn 8. I needed to roll some 15 dice to manage it and failed about half-way through. 0-0 half time.

Second half

The Elves received and started by making his treeman hit a skeleton, which was clearly a bad move, as he firstly took root, and then rolled triple red skull, failing his Loner re-roll. Fortunately (and surprisingly, given his record for lying around) he stood up the very next turn. Fortunately for the Wanderers, the Khemri are slow and ponderous, so were unable to pick up the ball, though they did mark it. The elves however secured the ball and passed it to a wardancer who was (just) within scoring range. The Khemri closed in leading to a rather busy area of the pitch - I'd estimate around 18 players in a 8x7 square. I spent a while staring at all of this, trying to decide what combination of moves/blocks/ball movement was the safest, but then found my turn was almost up so I decided to scrap all that thinking and try to score. A successful block, leap and dodge and the elves had the lead at 1-0 on turn 12. Not ideal to score early on but Raveen had left me with little choice.

So - 4 turns for the Khemri to equalise - could they do it? It started off well for them as they secured the ball straight away, as a result in 1 turn they were in a similar pitch position to what they had taken 4 turns to achieve in the first half. The elves had learnt somewhat from the first Khemri drive and managed some better defensive work this time, slowing the Khemri juggernaut but unable to get the ball. A couple of elves were de-pitched around here, and it was all leading up to a very tense end of the game. I took my last turn, lined up what defences I could muster with the 5 elves I had who could get in the way, and then leapt in with a wardancer, who got a 1D block on the ball carrier - who failed to get the ball loose! A chance for a last-minute equalizer - could the Khemri manage it? Their coach worked out what needed to be done and instructed his players accordingly. The blocks were good meaning a double GFI was needed to get the score - and it worked! 1-1 in turn 16 - the game was destined for extra time!

Extra time

The Khemri kicked off against 8 or 9 elves, and lined up in a 4-4-3 formation designed to make it difficult for the elves to get round/past. For the first couple of turns some (relatively) light blocking happened and the Khemri kept their formation, whilst the leves kept the ball in the backfield and pondered how to get past. Then Bee Tiered, who suddenly found himself unmarked, decided to do something about this stalemate, and unpetrurbed by the failure of his last blitz (he took root), took two steps forward and smashed a tomb guardian from midfield to the ground. This created some space in the opposition half into which all the elves who were able (apart from the ball carrier) flooded, in a loose cage-like formation.

The Khemri closed around this formation, and then tried to block one of the elves - it was a risky one dice block which went wrong, and the Khemri player ended up on his backside! This meant there was a way out of this cage-like formation on turn 20, if only the dice were kind... the thrower threw it to Ernie, who caught it, completed three dodges, ran for the line, rolled for the GFI... and succeeded! 2-1 and victory to the Elves!

The Khemri had one turn to score - impossible barring a crazy kick-off roll, which then happened as a riot occurred, leading the clock to go back one turn. However it soon turned out that both coaches had clearly gone delirious after such a long match, as the referee had in fact called the clock to go forwards one turn. ::)

Post-game analysis

The return of the Treeman made a huge difference in avoiding the steam-rollering the elves suffered from last time. Linked to that, I was never (until extra time) heavily down in player numbers, whereas last time I had quite a few players splattered in the very first couple of turns. It meant the blocks that were happening were not always on the Khemri's terms. Having my kicker back helped as well, making it that bit harder for the Khemri to advance with the ball.

It was an exciting game with many highlights and pivotal moments, good plays and mistakes by both coaches. Probably my favourite match of the season and the closest too (first time it's been a draw after 16 turns each). I still find myself running out of time on a regular basis though..

Man of the match has to be Ernie. This guy has all the skills. His triple GFI dauntless blitz to get the ball carrier in the first half saved a certain score, then in extra time he caught the ball and scored the winner (agility 5 is nice). What a complete legend.

Dice analysis

D6 - My chance score was about 7 and Rav's was about minus 7, so a significant gap - mostly down to his terrible GFI record (11 from 17, I think). It did feel like more of my stuff came off than would be expected, and I think I only had one "double one" all game.
2D6 - our luck on the armour was pretty even and pretty average. I think I had fewer players KO'ed/injured then I was expecting.
Block dice - we had 40%/42% success, 3 turnovers each, and, surprisingly, almost identical average block dice per roll. I think given the average block dice, and the better block-related skills on my players, I would've been expected to have had a higher block success rate than Rav, but in the game it didn't feel particularly bad. My two most-rolled sides were red skull followed by both down though.

Overall - Rav had marginally better block dice and I had significantly better D6. Given that, to take it to extra time is great credit to Raveen's coaching.

Idan, can I tempt the Cangurus into a 3rd/4th playoff match on Sunday? The Carrions are itching to get hold of some elves and hit them a lot :)

I genuinely didn't see that last elf with the tackle zone on the ball, am appalled by my stupidity ;)

Well played Gandalf - 2-1 to the Wood Elves!

It's amazing how those 2 minutes fly by, even when you have a comparatively small number of options to choose from, as you did in your last turn....

BB Manager seems to be down so I can't give a score page, check the dice, or easily review what happened, but yeah it finished 2-1. Very quick synopsis....

First half, elves kicked off. Underworld collect the ball. Wardancer marks ball carrier but gets zapped and the apothecary gets used to keep him in the match. The underworld move to the side. Elves make a nuisance of themselves but fail to capture the ball, getting a few injuries for their troubles. Nevertheless the underworld bravely run away to their back field, before moving back again. All the while my treeman displayed elf-like qualities in terms of movement, I've never seen a treeman cover so much ground in one match before, and amazingly he never took root until turn 16. The half was almost up and I thought my 8 elves had them covered, but wait! A Skaven lineman is given the ball and runs into the empty quarter of the pitch! I hadn't seen the danger he posed, and from the comments of our expert live commentary team, they hadn't seen it either. Well played la. The only lineman who possibly could've intervened got caught up in David Bowie's tentacles. 1-0 to the Undercheesers.

With one turn left the elves tried a one-turn touchdown and delivered a masterclass on how not to do it. So they hit some goblins instead and threw the ball around.

Second half, elves received. The two catchers went downfield. Ernie was hit but could get up, and the other elf was marked by Bowie. However, they don't call him the second-fastest milkman for nothing and he burst free to stand in the endzone and collect a long pass to make it 1-1 in turn 10.

So then, the undercheesers received and caught the ball. A wood elf lineman burst through, knocked over the ball carrier and picked it up but couldn't go anywhere with it, so he got knocked over. And the undercheesers marked the ball before picking up in turn 12/13. They went left. They went right. Bowie had a bout of the stupid and did nothing. The tension was mounting - any error now could decide the destiny of the cup. The elves rolled a double one but the underworld team decided not to take advantage of the gap it created - there were a couple of elves on cover. As the undercheesers looked to find a way through, one of their players tried a bit too hard to go for it, and fell over! (double one) This left the ball carrier isolated with several elves within distance. The carrier got knocked over, the ball was retrieved and ran/thrown into the endzone, for a 2-1 score to the elves.

It wasn't all over yet though! 2 turns was not an impossible timeframe for the Underworld team to score, especially with only 9 elves on the pitch. They collected the ball, made a hole in the elven lines and put some players through it, though the time clock ran out before everything was accomplished. The Wood Elves considered their options and decided to go all-in on knocking the ball loose. 4 elves combined to make it a 2 dice block, which stunned the ball carrier. The ball was now loose but I was unable to pick it up due to the elves I had concentrated on getting it loose and because Bowie & his tentacles were bothering a couple of elves. So it came down to the last turn. A dodge, pickup in one tackle zone, dodge, and 2 GFI's required to score, with an AG3 player. Was there a way to make it easier for him? Yes there was, as a goblin blitzed in with a 1 dice block to remove the need for the first dodge. The need for the second dodge & the pickup tackle zone could be removed by Bowie, but no! He went stupid again! With almost no time on the clock, the pickup worked, but the dodge failed. A dramatic ending to what was agreed by all to be an exciting match to watch.

Sorry if I missed any important details.

=======================

Dice analysis (without seeing what the dice rolls were)
D6: Probably quite even, apart from the big guys... the Treeman refused to take root until the very end, whereas Bowie failed quite a few Really Stupid rolls.
Block dice : I think we both did pretty well here. I don't think there were any turnovers from block dice. la did well in getting his tackle guys to block vs. my dodge guys on a regular basis.
2D6: first half, more elves failed armour then I would expect, second half they clearly had new mithril armour on and failed very few. My 2D6 rolls felt the other way around, poor to start with, but improved. So in summary, no idea who had the better ones :p

Nominated elf to sit out next match: Eleri (my kicker). Lineman levels up to lv4 and rolls a double! Alan is no longer the only elf with guard so I could probably fire him now, but that would make Rav sad so I won't.

Fun game, fun tourney, the elves are off to parade their trophy boot with pride for the next couple of months, but they shall return!

At the very least I think the match demonstrated how not to do a one turn touchdown, and how to run out of time to complete your turn (repeatedly). :)
